Chapter 1: What is blogging, and how does one make money with it?

To give you a simple definition, blogging refers to creating and publishing content on a website or blog. An individual usually runs a blog, and the writing style is informal and conversational.

Blogs cover many topics, from personal stories drawn from experiences to hobbies to industrial news.  The topics can be written articles with added pictures (like the one you are reading), videos, or slide presentations.

How Does Blogging Work?

There are different types of blogs: personal, niche, and business. A personal blog lets you express your views on various subjects and share your experiences or hobbiesNiche blogs provide informative knowledge on multiple subjects such as health, technology, politics, and/or sports. Business blogs are created by companies to promote their brands and share news about their services and new product launches, for instance.

The Purpose of Blogging

Writing, expressing oneself, and sharing thoughts and opinions are necessary. Doing so produces a sense of accomplishment—the feeling that you've achieved something productive. It brings happiness.

Blogging provides information to create awareness, inspire, and convey messages, sharing insightful thoughts that can help readers. It can bring people together and build a community of like-minded people.

Choose a Niche:

Whether you’re starting a personal, niche, or business blog, writing about something you genuinely care about and know well is important. When you’re passionate about your topic, writing becomes much easier.

Your niche could be anything — parenting, travel, book reviews, recipes, or personal finance. The key is to stick with something you enjoy and can write about regularly.

Which Blogging Platform Should You Use?

People often ask, “What’s the best blogging platform?” The truth is, it’s not just about the platform — it’s about your content. Think of it like this: you can have the fanciest plate in the world, but it won't satisfy anyone if there's no food on it.

There are both free and paid platforms. For beginners, user-friendly options like Blogger (owned by Google) and Weebly are great starting points. Blogger hosts your blog for free, and you don’t need to buy a domain name, though having one can add professionalism and credibility.
